Marking Period 1 : Informational and Opinion
Change in United States Government Inquiry
Driving Question: How have conflicts and compromises among the people in the United States prompted change in government?
Through the lens of social studies content including the study of events between the American Revolution and the development of the United States Constitution, students will research a movement in United States history in order to write an informative piece about how the conflicts and compromises of the movement caused change in the United States government. They will use their research to write an in-depth informative piece and a shorter opinion piece to explain the movement and the results of the actions or compromises which occurred in response to the movement as well as to explain the change in government as a result of the movement.
Marking Period 2 : Informational and Opinion
Contribution to the American Revolution
Driving Question: How can one individual or event change the course of history?
Continuing with our study of the American Revolution in social studies, students will research a specific event or person that contributed to either the colonists success or British downfall. Students will research and write an informational essay about the event or individual and the contribution made. Students will then write a longer opinion piece focusing on why the event or individual was the most influential during the American Revolution.
Marking Period 3 : Narrative
Driving Question: How do authors use characteristics of a genre to structure and develop a story?
Before selecting the genre for their narrative, students read a variety of texts to analyze how authors use the characteristics of a genre to structure and develop a story. After selecting a genre for the Narrative Inquiry, students conduct research to provide details for a setting, characters and plot including setbacks and resolutions. In addition to publishing their narrative, students create a book trailer for a multimedia presentation.
Marking Period 4: Informational and Personal Narrative
Careers Present and Future
Driving Questions: Which factors will have the strongest impact on determining the occupations that will exist in 15 – 20 years? In what ways does the ability to apply thinking and academic success skills determine the success of workers in 15-20 years?
Students will choose an occupation to research and formulate detailed questions to begin their inquiry. Then, students will gather facts about their selected occupation and seek answers to their detailed questions. After gathering information, students will analyze their research to determine whether they believe the occupation will or will not exist in 15-20 years. As a result, they will draft a thesis statement and begin to organize reasons to support their thesis.
